How Do TikTok Music Royalties Work?

Label Engine General, Help, Tips

It’s important as an artist to make sure you are collecting royalties from all the sources you can. With TikTok being one of the most used social media apps in the world, lets take a look at how the royalties work and how you can collect them.

How Do TikTok Music Royalties Work?

Royalties are generated from TikTok’s revenue. While most DSP’s pay royalties based off stream numbers or play count, TikTok pays a little differently. TikTok pays you based off the amount of videos that use your music. Your distributor will collect your royalties on your behalf, then pay them to you.

How Much Does TikTok Pay?

Each distributor and label has their own deals in place with TikTok that determine how much the artist is paid. As stated above, you will only be paid based based on video count, not play count. Videos range from 15 seconds all the way to 10 minutes which will determine how much royalties will be paid out to you. Take this quote from Sound Campaign:

“Therefore, according to the most recent data available, TikTok pays three cents for each new video in which your song is played. It would take 1,000 videos featuring your music for you to make $30. According to these numbers, 1,000,000 uses of your track would bring in about $30,000.”

How Long Does It Take To Get Paid?

TikTok pays out royalties on a quarterly basis, so you can expect payment from your distributor or label about every 3 months.
